‘Gentle Ben’ a vital member of Catholic Charities’ therapy team in Dundalk

The Catholic Charities Child and Family Services outpatient mental health clinic on the grounds of St. Rita Parish in Dundalk is a bustling facility, with a staff of six therapists, two social skills counselors, two intake coordinators – and one chocolate Labrador retriever. Ben, a six-year-old certified therapy dog, brings a calming effect to the clients, which allows them to communicate more openly about their challenges.

Special needs ministries, blessings all around

This is a story about two very special women: Lisa McGann believes that people with “different abilities” do not need charity as much as they need to feel a sense of worth. Jane Wolfe talks of the joy she gets from her “guys.” McGann has been involved in special-needs ministry at the parish level for four years, Wolfe for five decades, but they are bonded by the mercy that serves their guests and inspires fellow parishioners.
